Program Description

English is widely used for cross cultural communication both in writing and in speech. Thus the language, as a dynamic entity, acquires new words and linguistic structures in its day to day use amongst communities of different cultural origins and backgrounds. English keeps on changing rapidly to keep up with technology and new, improved channels of communication. In such a context, English language is one of the major subjects in education. Moreover, teachers of English are now required to produce students who are not only sound in syntax and lexis of English, but who are also aware of the evolving nature of the language and have an appreciation for an entire culture behind the language.

The programme Diploma in English Language Teaching (Level 4) will improve not only the English skills of the students, but also will give them a sound knowledge regarding Teaching Methodology, while preparing them to be better professionals in the field of Education. Moreover, the course will develop students’ analytical skills by motivating students to contemplate on, analyze and find answers to issues related to English language teaching. Thus, the student will have gained both theoretical and practical knowledge to be competent English teachers by completing this course.

Core objectives of the programme

The core objectives of the progamme are to;

  • Teach English language skills, reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Simplify English grammar concepts for ELLs (English Language Learners)
  • Plan lessons to be able to deliver effective lessons that meet class learning objectives and promote productive learning
  • Familiarize with different approaches and methods of English Teaching while improving their knowledge in English and English teaching competence
  • Identify learning styles to adapt lessons to suit students and their needs
  • Create effective learning materials, find, adapt and personalize a variety of materials to use in the classroom.
  • Manage classroom and student behavior to create a welcoming and safe learning environment
  • Plan strategies, and to prepare tools for assessing students’ language achievement
  • Pursue professional development opportunities as life-long learners.

  1. English Language and Language skills

Language is essentially a skill. It is not a content-based subject like-Science, Social Studies, Commerce, Mathematics, etc., which aim is to imparting information and fill the human mind with knowledge. There are four fundamental language skills, (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing). The system of language functions through sounds, words and structure. These are integrated with one another and constitute the complex whole which is language.

Teaching English to Young learners is essential. It involves more than merely teaching language skills. In the young learners, age are extremely important to encourage their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development. In teaching young learners, a teacher has many options when choosing to teach, What we teach and how to make the condition of the class effectively.

  1. Educational Psychology

This module aims to provide a descriptive and critical overview of the practice of educational psychology in terms of teaching and learning. It seeks to understand behavioral phenomena related to the educational process, to predict the occurrence of educational situations, and ultimately to control and try to control them.

  1. Teaching and Learning strategies

Teaching and learning strategies can include a range of whole class, group and individual activities to accommodate different abilities, skills, learning rates and styles that allow every student to participate and to achieve some degree of success. They promote critical and reflective thinking, research, evaluation and collaborative learning and also focus on literacy skills

Testing and evaluation of language skills and competencies are very important components of language teaching. Testing becomes an integral part of teaching because it provides significant information or inputs about the growth and achievement of learner’s difficulties, styles of learning, anxiety levels. Effective teaching and effective testing are two sides of the same coin

Investigating new trends that shed light on the fresh best and modern researches that deal with requirement of the modern period that improves Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Issues are the ideas, thoughts, and debates centered on educational policy and practices. Trends are new, up-and-coming, and popular educational practices. A language teacher should have the ability to manage the issues and make utilize the opportunities of the trends.
